Chalk up yet another record for The Avengers: fastest film ever to reach $1 billion worldwide. It did so on Sunday, barely, as the Marvel/Disney movie earned $103.2 million in North America and $95.4 million abroad, putting its worldwide total at $1.002 billion. By contrast, the Johnny Depp vampire drama Dark Shadows looked toothless, pulling in $28.8 million. While The Avengers dominated among younger moviegoers, Dark Shadows drew 73 percent of its audience from people over the age of 25. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dan Fellman indicated that the film would ordinarily have performed more strongly but that it found itself in the “unusual position of being behind the vacuum cleaner that is The Avengers.” Will the film be able to recoup its $125-million production cost and $35-million marketing expenditure? Said Fellman, “It’s now all about taking a deep breath and seeing how we hang in there for the second weekend.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. The Avengers, Disney/Marvel, $103,052,274, 2 Wks. Warner Bros. is going all-out to promote its 70th anniversary edition of the Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Bergman classic Casablanca including a one-night-only streaming of the movie on Facebook on May 16 — free. Warner Bros. Digital Distribution said that it will stream at 7:00 p.m. in the Eastern and Western time zones, but it was not clear whether that meant that viewers in the West would be able to watch the movie at 4:00 p.m. and viewers in the East, at 10:00 p.m. To make matters even more confusing, the company said that viewing must begin “within two hours of the Pacific start time.” The free availability of the movie comes following the release of the Blu-ray/DVD combo package of Casablanca, containing almost everything you wanted to know about the movie, including the documentaries Casablanca: An Unlikely Classic; Michael Curtiz: The Greatest Director You Never Heard of; The Brothers Warner; You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story and Jack L. Warner: The Last Mogul. If that still doesn’t satisfy film buffs, there’s also an ebook being released called Inside the Script, containing Hal Wallis’s shooting script and additional items including Warner Bros. founder Jack Warner’s telegrams and memos concerning the movie. »

Movie Reviews: The Dictator

Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator is arriving today (Wednesday),, instead of on Friday, in an apparent effort to avoid the fate of several fellow dictators of late. The relatively low-budget comedy is arriving at a time when the box office is deluged with $100-200-million blockbusters. Baron Cohen has been relentlessly promoting the movie for months — on the red carpet at the Oscars, on a host of TV talk shows, on an extravagant website, and even at Cannes, where the movie is not being screened but where an impressive ad for it covers the entrance to one of the classy hotels in Cannes during the current film festival. (Baron Cohen also rode a camel down the Cruoisette.) Reviews have been mixed but tip toward the favorable. Roger Ebert begins his review in the Chicago Sun-Times with these words: “The Dictator is funny, in addition to being obscene, disgusting, scatological, vulgar, crude and so on. … He establishes a claim to be the best comic filmmaker now working.” Likewise Michael Phillips dispenses with all the conflicting adjectives to describe the movie, settling on “maddeningly uneven.” However, he continues, “I stuck with it, though, because Cohen at his best is both brazen and sly.” And Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News suggests that audiences will share her conflicted feelings about the movie: “The easily offended will be appalled. The rarely offended may be appalled. But they’ll have to stop laughing long enough to realize it.” But A.O. Scott in the New York Times is not amused, insisting that most of the jokes “fall flat” and are “half-baked.” He concludes, “The main insult of The Dictator is how lazy it is.” But most reviewers — those praising the movie and those frowning on it — agree that a scene in which the dictator delivers a speech about the failings of fascism is worth the price of admission. Comments Peter Howell in the Toronto Star: “It’s one of the few times when a single scene redeems an entire movie.”

Cannes Opener Charms Critics

At a time when the major studios seem to be vying to produce the most expensive and gigantic blockbusters in history, a slight, charming film about a pair of tweens discovering first love appeared to captivate critics as it opened the Cannes Film Festival today (Wednesday). At a news conference, the stars of Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, who include Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban and Edward Norton — many of whom have appeared together in Wes Anderson movies before — talked about their modest and casual working conditions. It was all like a “fun adventure,” said Murray. Norton remarked that he had always fantasized about becoming part of a company of actors like Orson’s Welles’s Mercury Theater Players. “I used to dream about how fun it would be to be in a troupe like that.” For him, making the movie was like “being in summer camp,” he said. “Every movie that we start is like a bigger reunion,” Anderson himself said. The actors talked about wearing their own clothes and putting on their own makeup. The film was shot in Super 16mm, sometimes with cameras that were so small that they had to be handheld, and as a result, Anderson said, “they gave us a freedom that was something new to us.” Some day, Anderson said, he will probably be forced to make movies with digital cameras — even Technicolor is getting out of processing film, he observed; however, he said, digital is “no substitute” for film. But of course the movie is being transferred to digital media and will be screened with digital projectors. Being a throwback to Hollywood’s past, it would appear, can only go so far. The film is due to open domestically on May 25. »

Brooks and Murdoch

Rebekah Brooks, who was once one of Rupert Murdoch’s closest associates — sometimes called his protégée — is among the first persons criminally charged in the scandal that has hit Murdoch’s newspaper business in Britain The Crown Prosecution Service — comparable to the U.S. Attorney General’s office — accused Brooks, the former head of News International, of perverting the course of justice by allegedly attempting to remove evidence of related to telephone hacking and bribery of police and other public officials from News Corp offices. Others charged with criminal conduct included Mark Hanna, the former head of security at News International, Brooks’ personal assistant Cheryl Carter, Brooks chauffeur Paul Edwards and Daryl Jorsling who was assigned to provide personal security services to Brooks. Specifically, Brooks and Carter were charged with conspiring “to remove seven boxes of material from the archive of News International,” the umbrella organization for News Corps’ U.K. news operations. In a statement, Alison Levitt, principal legal advisor to the director of public prosecutions said “All these matters relate to the ongoing police investigation into allegations of phone hacking and corruption of public officials in relation to the News of the World and The Sun newspapers.” Brooks later released a terse statement deploring “this weak and unjust decision.” »

Rebekah Brooks

The former head of News International, the umbrella group for News Corp’s British newspapers, lashed out at authorities on Tuesday after she was formally charged with perverting the course of justice by allegedly attempting to conceal information about telephone hacking and bribing police and other public officials by reporters and editors working for Ni’s News of the World and The Sun. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. Speaking to reporters in London on Tuesday, Rebekah Brooks said, “I am baffled by the decision to charge me today. However, more importantly, I cannot express my anger enough that those closest to me have been dragged into this unfairly.” (Brooks’s husband Charlie and four others were also criminally charged on Tuesday.) But Brooks seemed to predict that nothing would come of the prosecution. “One day the details of this case will emerge and people will see today as nothing more than an expensive sideshow, a waste of public money as a result of an unjust and weak decision,” she said. Standing next to her, Charlie Brooks called the prosecution “a witch hunt” and questioned whether those charged would be able to receive a fair trail given the “biased commentary” by the news media. »

A last-ditch attempt at blocking the merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has been — well, ditched. A group of dissident SAG members had continued to pursue the litigation even after last March’s union election in which members of both unions overwhelmingly approved the merger. On Wednesday, however, the plaintiffs dispatched a letter to SAG’s outside counsel, Bob Bush, saying, “After careful consideration, largely reflecting on the results of the recent merger election, my clients have reached the conclusion that continued prosecution of the pending litigation would not assist the cause they initially sought to champion.” Today’s (Thursday) Hollywood Reporter quoted SAG-aftra executive vice president Ned Vaughn as saying, “Dropping this frivolous lawsuit was the first good decision the plaintiffs have made.” »

The second day of the Cannes film festival opened with a press screening of yet another strong entry in the 65th annual competition for the top Palme d”Or award, director Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone, starring Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. Closing credits were greeted with sustained applause by the audience. The film, about a series of tragic events that ultimately remake the lives of the two protagonists (for the better), received mostly positive early reviews. Peter Bradshaw of Britain’s Guardian newspaper concluded: “It is a passionate and moving love story which surges out of the screen like a flood tide.” Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter praised the “unvarnished, forthright performances” of the two stars. Sasha Stone of TheWrap.com called it “beautifully rendered, deeply felt.” But the Chicago Tribune‘s Michael Phillips, acknowledging that he was “probably in the minority” commented that “the entire picture feels like a poetic-grunge generality, with a penchant for jacked-up tension that feels applied to the situation, not pulled from within the people on screen.” »

A New Blow Dealt To Netflix — In Latin America

Shares of Netflix fell 3 percent today (Thursday) after recovering from a deeper decline earlier in the day as investors reacted to news that the company’s launch in Latin America is experiencing unforeseen difficulties. Netflix launched in 43 Latin American countries last year, where growth has proved to be slower than it had been in other countries where it had launched during the past three years, including Canada, the U.K. and Ireland. Speaking to an investors conference in New York on Wednesday, Netflix CFO David Wells suggested that a major problem may be that Latin Americans have had little experience downloading movies and TV shows online (partly because highspeed broadband is being rolled out relatively slowly there). “The key thing we have learned with Latin America is that when a market has a competitor set, that may actually help us,” he said. Now, however, Netflix has to explain to Latin American consumers “that click-and-watch, Internet-delivered entertainment will actually work” But investors must certainly have worried that Netflix’s difficulties in Latin America will escalate its debt, which some analysts have already described as intolerable. »

Larry King is clearly frustrated over being relegated to the sidelines while the presidential campaigns heat up. On Thursday he said that he plans to resume his nightly talk show this summer instead of next fall and to attend the Democratic and Republican national conventions. The show will be carried by Ora.TV, the digital channel being financed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. In an interview with the Associated Press, King said that he had recruited many members of his old CNN production staff. The new talk show, he indicated, will be more or less the same as his old one, except that he will no longer be bound by time constraints. Ordinarily, he said, it will run about 30 minutes, but it could be shorter or longer depending on how the interviews go and who’s being interviewed. Even though it will only be available via the Internet, King said he expects to be able to book big names for it — he’s aiming for President Obama or Mitt Romney as his first guest. “It’s not Harvey Glick saying ‘please come on the Harvey Glick show,’” he told the AP. »

The Avengers Likely To Sink Battleship

Universal’s sci-fi/action film Battleship will face the titanic might of The Avengers this weekend and will likely wind up scuppered, according to most analysts’ forecasts. In its third weekend, the superhero epic is expected to earn around $50-55 million, about half what it did a week ago. But, according to tracking reports, Battleship, which cost nearly as much to produce — around $225 million — may only earn around $30-35 million. The film was released overseas a month ago, ostensibly to avoid having to compete against the Olympics and the European soccer championships. But with little competition, the movie raked in more than $220 million, enough to assure that it will at least break even. In any case, it’s almost certain to beat two other newcomers at the domestic box office, the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator and the romcom What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The Dictator opened on Wednesday with a so-so $4.2 million and may likely rake in an additional $15 million by the end of the weekend. Perhaps tellingly, it received just a C grade from moviegoers polled by researchers CinemaScore; critics gave it a mixed reception. On the other hand, reviews have been overwhelmingly negative for Lionsgate’s Expecting, which is expecting around $15-20 million in ticket sales. »

Movie Reviews: Battleship

Stupid. That’s the general consensus of critics reviewing the big-budget, board-game-based, sci-fi epic Battleship, about aliens bent on destroying the world. Take Amy Biancolli’s review in the San Francisco Chronicle: “It’s loud, it’s large, it’s stupid, and its best gag involves a chicken burrito. It features Taylor Kitsch wearing many more clothes, and maybe one more facial expression, than he did in John Carter,” she writes. Rex Reed in the New York Observer remarks that it appears aimed at “summer audiences with a high tolerance for stupidity and low expectations.” Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal observes that at some point in the movie, audiences may feel that they’re looking at one more “extinction-level event, one that threatens the end of logic, storytelling, characterization, hearing and maybe even the movie business as we know it.” However, he does allow that some of the lines in the script “rise above intentional stupidity into inspired idiocy.” But Linda Barnard in the Toronto Star regards the movie simply as “the loudest, dumbest alien-invasion movie based on a board game since, well, ever.” That’s a sentiment shared by Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News, who describes the movie as, “the worst humans-fighting-aliens movie I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of humans-fighting-aliens movies.” But some critics simply advise to forget trying to make sense of the script. “The film eventually comes down to lots of scenes in which things get blowed up real good,” Roger Ebert comments in the Chicago Sun-Times. And Neil Genzlinger in the New York Times suggests moviegoers regard Battleship the way they would “a macaroni dinner, familiar and easy to eat and not particularly nutritious.”

Movie Reviews: What To Expect When You’Re Expecting

18 May 2012 11:48 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

The best thing that What to Expect When You're Expecting has got going for it is its production budget — it cost only $25 million to make. And although the film’s publicists have been working overtime trying to find a hook that will appeal to men, it has been tracking heavily among females — only. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star, one of the few critics to give the film something less than a devastating review, nevertheless suggests that it ought to come with a “cuteness alert.” Otherwise, he writes, it promises “a few laughs and some nods of recognition.” And Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times halts himself in mid-review for being too “snarky,” and then virtually apologizes. “This is a good-hearted movie with some winning performances,” he concedes, “but it has so many characters … that the plot nearly stalls with gridlock. It’s clever but the stories are thin soup.” Otherwise, the reviews could abort any possibility of the movie’s success if enough people actually read them. Melissa Moseley in the New York Daily News says that it “may be the first movie to actually induce morning sickness.” Actually, says Faran Smith Nahme in the New York Post, the movie “isn’t as charmless as you might have feared, largely due to a cast working furiously to sell every scene.” That cast includes Matthew Morrison, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Quaid Brooklyn Decker, Rodrigo Santoro, Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford. But, writes Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times, that cast adds up to so many characters that “the filmmakers should have considered bringing on someone from Espn’s ‘SportsCenter’ to give us the play by play.” »

U.S. track and field star and model Lolo Jones has sensationally revealed she is still a virgin at 29.

The pretty Iowan Olympic hurdler went public about her struggles to stay pure for a potential husband - and her efforts to find a mate online - during a TV expose in America on Tuesday night.

In an interview on HBO's Real Sports, Jones discussed her dating challenges and her decision not to have sex, stating, "It's just something, a gift that I want to give to my husband, but please, understand, this journey has been hard.

"If there's virgins out there, I'm going to let them know, it's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life - harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage.

"I've been tempted. I've had guys tell me, 'You know, if you have sex, it will help you run faster.'"

Maggie Gyllenhaal Stunned By Critics' Shock About New Sex Film

Maggie Gyllenhaal is stunned by the shock of journalists who have caught early screenings of her new movie about the invention of the vibrator.

The Batman Begins star thought R-rated period comedy Hysteria would be a hoot for critics, but it seems many of them have been left surprised by the film's risque scenes of uptight women experiencing orgasm.

She tells BlogTalkRadio.com, "I liked the comedy of ladies having loud orgasms in doctor's offices. I watched this movie once in Rome, just sort of popped my head in, and I've talked to a lot of international press in Italy and Scandinavia, all over and I have been surprised by how shocking the movie is to them with the orgasm stuff and women coming and thinking about their bodies that way.

"It came out of not being used to seeing stuff like that. Even I felt that way and the first movie (Secretary) I ever made was an S&M (sadomasochism) movie! I do not think of myself as prudish at all. I'm interested in sex, I'm curious about it and I think of myself as pretty open. But I was surprised by my own response and the audience's response by how uncomfortable it still makes us.

"I had some interesting conversations with women in Italy. My favourite one was with this woman who asked me, 'Which one had done more for women and women's rights movement, the vibrator or the dishwasher?' I think I have to go with the dishwasher!"

Haneke’S Amour Is Not The Love Of Most Movies

Wouldn’t you know, the current favorite to win the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival this year is arguably the most depressing film that has thus far been screened. And the least Hollywood-like. Amour, Michael Haneke’s film about a woman dying from a series of strokes and the husband who lovingly cares for her, is brilliantly acted and directed — and unbearably painful to watch. It is hard to imagine a harsher death than the one imposed on the principal character, portrayed by Emmanuelle Riva, in Michael Haneke’s drama or a greater burden than that undertaken by her husband and caretaker, portrayed by Jean-Louis Trintignant. The film has received virtually unanimous praise from critics attending the festival. Peter Bradshaw in Britain’s Guardian newspaper described it as “a moving, terrifying and uncompromising drama of extraordinary intimacy and intelligence.” Deborah Young in the Hollywood Reporter called it “magnificent in its simplicity and its relentless honesty about old age, illness and dying.” At a news conference, however, Haneke denied that he was making a commentary on any of that. He was, he said, merely attempting to make a simple film about a long, loving relationship and its inevitable end.

Halle Berry Fighting To Make Schools Paparazzi-free Zones

Halle Berry has taken aim at Hollywood's paparazzi again, insisting it's time for the "creepy" snappers to stop hanging around outside the schools which celebrities' young kids attend.

The Oscar winner was caught on camera clashing with photographers as she was picking her daughter Nahla up from a Los Angeles school on 10 May.

Screaming obscenities, the angry actress told the snappers, "I'm doing something honourable. I'm not harassing people!"

The Monster's Ball star has since apologised for the way she handled the situation, but she's still adamant that schools should be paparazzi-free zones.

She tells U.S. news show Access Hollywood, "We're stooping to a new low when we prop up our children and we exploit them like this, and people can't wait to open magazines to see what four year olds are wearing. There's something fundamentally wrong with that and our children should be off-limits.

"They are innocent little babies that don't need to be exploited all over these magazines.

"I'm fair game, I get it. But my kids and the kids at my daughter's school should not be harassed like that. It's just wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong."

She adds, "When you have these creepy guys with cameras lurking around, it's really hard for parents... It's just a chaos and a confusion that doesn't need to surround where little kids play and where they live and sort of what their world is. It's just not right."

Brad Pitt Blends Politics Into Crime Drama

Brad Pitt’s Killing Them Softly – he’s both the producer and star – premiered at the Cannes Film Festival today (Tuesday) and promptly courted controversy from both the right and the left. The film is set in 2008 during the presidential election and features clips of president-to-be Obama promising reforms that never came about. As Michael Phillips put it in his review in the Chicago Sun-Times, “The transactions and grisly tactics we see in the story makes [Obama's] words taste ashen.” But the script also appears to take on America’s capitalist system — something that will arouse the anger of the right. “America’s not a country. It’s a business,” Pitt’s character remarks. It’s dialog like that that led Sasha Stone of TheWrap.com to comment, “There’s no getting around it. Killing them Softly is a deliberate indictment of the American capitalist system,” as it alludes to how the Obama administration wound up aiding the very people responsible for the economic collapse. At a news conference, Pitt denied that the film was a criticism of Obama but he implied that he is unhappy that the president has failed to punish those responsible for the mortgage collapse. “It was criminal, by the way, and there still haven’t been any criminal repercussions for that,” he said. Australian director Peter Dominick, who adapted the novel on which the movie is based, commented, “I always feel that crime films are about capitalism because it is a genre where it is perfectly acceptable for all the characters to be motivated by the desire for money. In some ways, the crime film is the most honest American film because it portrays Americans as I experience a lot of them, in Hollywood, as being very concerned with money.” »

Battleship Submerged By Avengers‘ Force (Updated)

21 May 2012 1:50 PM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Universal’s Battleship promptly sailed into the doldrums as it opened domestically this weekend and promptly found itself swamped by the backwash of The Avengers, which continued to set box office records in its third week. The superhero blockbuster, which sold more tickets in its first and second week than any film in history, nabbed a third-week record of $55.1 million, according to studio estimates. It also added another $56 million from overseas, bringing its worldwide gross to $1.18 billion, the most ever earned by a Disney film. But Battleship, the boardgame-to-movie sci-fi epic, came in at the low end of forecasts with just $25.3 million. Ordinarily that figure would have been regarded as a disaster for Universal, which had reportedly pumped more than $200 million into the production and another $100 million into marketing it. But the film has already earned $220 million overseas, where it opened early, softening the blow to Universal. It is still likely to end up a loser, but not a shocking one. Slammed on each side by the two blockbuster productions, Paramount’s Sacha Baron Cohen spoof The Dictator wound up with around $17.4 million — $24 million if receipts for Wednesday and Thursday are included. Against such overpowering competition, the movie probably stood as much of a chance of becoming a hit as North African dictators have had of remaining in power.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo: 1. The Avengers, Disney/Marvel, $55.1 million; 2. Battleship, Universal, $25.3 million; 3. The Dictator, Paramount, $17.4 million; 4. Dark Shadows, Warner Bros., $12.8 million; 5. What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Lionsgate, $10.5 million; 6. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Fox Searchlight, $3.3 million; 7. The Hunger Games, Lionsgate, $3 million; 8. Think Like a Man, Sony/Screen Gems; $2.7 million; 9. The Lucky One, Warner Bros., $1.8 million; 10. The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Sony/Aardman, $1.5 million.

Like last week and the week before, Disney/Marvel’s The Avengers got no higher than No. 3 on the pirate list, with Warner Bros.’ Journey 2: The Mysterious Island debuting at No. 2. Last week’s most pirated film, Sony’s 21 Jump Street, jumped down to No. 4, while Relativity’s Act of Valor made its first appearance on the pirate list at No. 5. Meanwhile, Disney announced that people will be able to buy or rent The Avengers legally beginning September 25. China’s flirtation with Hollywood took on the aspects of a full-scale marriage as one of its biggest exhibitors, Dalian Wanda Group, agreed to buy AMC Entertainment, America’s second largest theater chain after Regal Entertainment, for $2.6 billion in debt and equity and an additional $500 million to be used principally for renovations. The New York Times observed that the deal “represents a significant expansion of Chinese influence in the American film industry.” The Los Angeles Times noted that it gives Wanda “more clout in negotiating with major Hollywood studios eager to expand into the rapidly growing Chinese market.” The deal also follows reports that several studios are planning joint ventures with Chinese production companies to co-produce blockbuster movies in China. The deal calls for current AMC executives and managers to sign new contracts, but the length of those contracts was not disclosed. »

Lawless, About Blood And Brotherly Love, Screens At Cannes

AppId is over the quota

19 May 2012 8:15 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

The most pertinent footage in director John Hillcoat’s Lawless, which screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival today (Saturday), may have ended up on the proverbial cutting-room floor. The film, starring Shia Labeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, and Guy Pearce, tells the purportedly true story of the Bondurant brothers, who ran a moonshine operation in Virginia during Prohibition and were forced to take on Chicago gangsters on the one hand and corrupt police and feds on the other in order to keep their operation going. It all makes for a sentimental film about macho brotherly love punctuated at short intervals with violent scenes that would make most classic gangster movies seem sterile by comparison. At a news conference following a press screening where the movie was greeted with both boos and applause, Hillcoat said that he had originally planned to put the violence in perspective by opening the movie with a retrospective montage, beginning with the current wave of Mexican drug-cartel killings, then back through the cocaine and heroin wars in New York in the ’80s, and finally landing in the era of Prohibition in the 1920s and early ’30s. “That was the birth of serious organized crime, and it’s been going ever since. So it feeds into all of those things that are going on today,” the Australian director said. But for a reason that he did not explain, he decided to remove the opening montage, presumably in the belief that the audience would put two and two together on their own. But without that footage, some critics have suggested that the movie amounts to a pointless war exercise. “The violence is gruesome, and perpetual, with a particularly horrible tar-and-feather scene — and yet nothing somehow seems to be at stake for anyone, and the brutality seems to be there simply to underline how tough and real it all is,” wrote Peter Bradshaw in Britain’s Guardian newspaper. On the other hand, David Rooney commented in the Hollywood Reporter: “If Lawless doesn’t achieve the mythic dimensions of the truly great outlaw and gangster movies, it is a highly entertaining tale set in a vivid milieu, told with great style and populated by a terrific ensemble. For those of us who are suckers for blood-soaked American crime sagas from that era, those merits will be plenty.” Other critics suggest that it’s likely to find a lot of such “suckers.” If it does, it will amount to a kind of vindication for Hillcoat, who told today’s news conference in Cannes that “the state of things is pretty tough” for directors like himself to make films like Lawless. He said he prefers “to work in a world of medium budgets to make films about character and drama, and those are words you cannot use in the United States at this time, and that I find quite distressing.”

Will Smith is unrepentant over an "awkward" incident when he lashed out at a Ukrainian TV reporter who attempted to kiss him at the Moscow premiere of Men In Black III.

The actor lost his cool when a male journalist tried to land a smooch on his lips before a pre-screening interview last week and gave the man a light backhanded slap on the face before moving on down the red carpet.

However, Smith appeared to have no regrets when he was questioned about the incident during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday.

He told the host, "We're doing an interview and he says, ‘I’m you’re biggest fan, can I have a hug?’ So I go to give this joker a hug, and he tries to lean in and kiss me! It's just awkward.

"They were saying, 'We're sorry, that's just his schtick'. Well that’s why his a** got schtuck."

The Avengers set yet another record over the weekend. With $55.6 million in domestic ticket sales, it lifted its total to $457.7 million, while its worldwide earnings rose to nearly $1.2 billion — making it in just three weekends the highest-grossing Disney film in history. But what was good news for Disney was depressing news for Universal, which saw its $200-million-plus blockbuster Battleship open a distant second with just $25.5 million. Coming in third was the debut of Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator, which collected $17.4 million over the three-day weekend. Including screenings on Wednesday and Thursday, the film has now grossed $24.5 million. Moving into 354 theaters, Fox Searchlight’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel averaged $9,126 per theater — second only to The Avengers’ $13,096 average per theater — for a total of $3.23 million as it ascended to fifth place. Overall, however, the box office was down sharply from a year ago. Its $135.7 million total was down nearly 15 percent from last year’s $158.7 million when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened with $90.2 million.

Madeleine Stowe To Direct Her $5 Million Screenplay

The Last Of The Mohicans star Madeleine Stowe is finally bringing her western screenplay to the big screen after turning down $5 million (£3.1 million) to hand the project over to movie bosses at Twentieth Century Fox almost a decade ago.

The studio executives wanted the movie rights to Unbound Captives, but they didn't want her.

Instead, they wanted Gladiator star Russell Crowe to take the lead and Sir Ridley Scott to direct the film about a white woman whose children are taken by Comanche Indians in the 1860s.

Stowe says, "Without a moment’s thought, I turned it down."

Now, nine years later, Stowe is stepping behind the camera to direct Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in the film, admitting she opted not to star in the project when she turned 50 in 2009.

She tells More magazine, "It seemed like the right thing to do. I’m on fire with this idea of what I want this film to be and bringing together these incredibly gifted people and having a dynamic conversation."

Brad Pitt Defends Violent New Movie At Cannes

Brad Pitt has defended the level of violence in his new gangster movie Killing Them Softly, insisting gory scenes are "absolutely important to film".

The Hollywood actor plays a mob fixer opposite Ray Liotta in the movie, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France this week (beg21May12).

It features a number of brutal and bloody murder scenes, but Pitt is adamant violence on the big screen is an important part of Hollywood and admits he would feel worse about playing a racist character than a cold-blooded killer.

He tells reporters at Cannes, "Violence is an accepted part of the gangster world. Murder is a possibility. I would have a harder time playing a racist, something along those lines; that would be much more upsetting to me than playing someone shooting a guy in the face.

"But we live in such a violent world. I grew up hunting, which is a very violent act. If you've ever had a hamburger, the way they butcher a cow is barbaric and horrendous. This is the world we live in. I see violence as absolutely important to film."

Actress Anne Hathaway's ex-lover Raffaello Follieri will be released from prison in the U.S. on Thursday, according to a new report.

Businessman Follieri was jailed for four-and-a-half years in December 2008 after pleading guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.

Hathaway had dumped him shortly before he was arrested over a $3.6 million (£2.25 million) investment scam, and later admitted the scandal had made her "more wary" of men.

Follieri is due to be released from prison on Thursday after serving almost four years of his sentence and will be deported to his native Italy, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.

Funnyman Chris Rock helped talk hunky Joe Manganiello into stripping off in racy new movie Magic Mike when the True Blood star asked the comic for career advice.

Manganiello heard he was on director Steven Soderbergh's shortlist for the saucy film while he was shooting What to Expect When You're Expecting and he took the script to co-star Rock for his take on the film.

The actor admits his funny friend wasn't a fan of the film until Manganiello mentioned Soderbergh would be directing and his co-star would be Matthew McConaughey.

He tells Entertainment Weekly, "I was like, 'Should I do it?' And he's like, 'Ooh... male strippers, I don't know.' I was like, 'If I do this movie, guys are gonna hate my guts.' And Chris Rock is like, Motherf**ker, guys are gonna hate your guts anyway. Brad Pitt spent 15 years with his shirt off, he's doing just fine. Who's directing?'

"I go, 'Soderbergh', and he goes, 'Who's in it?' and I go, 'Channing (Tatum), McConaughey...' He goes, 'Do the f**king movie!'"

Actor Jason Ritter fancies himself as a real-life medic after brushing up on life-saving techniques for new TV series County.

The W star plays an intern at Los Angeles County Hospital in the drama and admits he went to great lengths to make sure he looked the part.

He tells WENN, "There was a lot of work that went into that job. I felt much more like a doctor by the time we finished.

"I imagine I would know how to save someone dying on the street but in reality I would probably call a real doctor. I do know CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) now and could start while we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive!"

Kevin Costner Defends Historical Mini-series

Kevin Costner hopes fans take his new historical TV mini-series Hatfields & McCoys seriously - because the men behind the infamous post-Civil War feud were the fathers and grandfathers of some of America's most important men.

The patriarchs of the Hatfield and McCoy families famously fought over a pig - and the squabble became a history-making drama at the beginning of what was to become the United States.

But Costner hopes TV viewers who tune in to the project, in which he stars opposite Bill Paxton, will realise the series is so much more than a story about a family argument among bearded, simple folk.

He tells Parade magazine, "As we get further and further removed from history, people start to think these stories weren't true - that the Hatfields and McCoys were a comic. But no, these were people who came out of the Civil War, which was the root of so many problems. So, to give authenticity and perspective to that story was interesting to me.

"These are very easy people to make fun of. They have beards; they're ultra-religious; they talk funny. But these people and their descendants were judges and senators. It's like what started the feud - one of the reasons was a pig trial. It's easy for us to laugh at that, right? But a pig could feed a family for 30 days.

"And today people will go to court if their view in Malibu (Florida) is obstructed."

Eva Mendes' Mother Offers Style Verdicts

14 minutes ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Eva Mendes always has her very own style consultant at hand - her mother emails her with verdicts on the actress' red carpet outfits.

The Hitch star regularly makes the fashion pages of magazines with her glitzy gowns, but Mendes' mum chimes in first with her thoughts on the clothes her daughter has picked.

Mendes says, "Normally I do something on the red carpet and wherever I am in the world she sends me a full email within minutes with everything she thought of my outfit.

"It's really super cute. It's not like crazy. It is never negative, it is always constructive. It's like, 'Eva, I don't know about that lipstick but that dress was gorgeous!' And then it will say, 'Hmm, your shoes? But your hair was lovely!'"

Actress/singer Taylor Momsen has shed her clothes for a raunchy men's magazine shoot.

Momsen poses in a pair of panties, hold-ups and leather ankle boots for one topless shot, with just her curly blonde hair preserving her modesty, while another image shows the 18 year old staring seductively at the camera while cupping her breast underneath a cropped T-shirt.

The teenager is also seen crawling across a washing machine in floral underwear, and she tops off the collection of saucy snaps by cuddling up to a topless female model.

Bruce Willis was determined to return to the Die Hard franchise for a fifth installment because he's "still trying" to make a sequel as good as the original.

The actor kickstarted his career as a big-screen action man playing New York cop John McClane in the 1988 blockbuster, which spawned three follow-ups.

Willis has signed up for a fifth outing, and he wants to make the movie better than ever.

He tells the BBC, "I'm still trying to do as good a film as the first one. I like playing that character. There'll come a time when I won't be able to do it anymore but while I still can, and I can still run and fall down, roll, run down the street, crash things, it's still fun to do."

And the 57-year-old new dad enjoys his stunt work on films, adding: "I still get a big kick out of it. I have a fun job."

Indian movie-maker Anurag Kashyap is hoping to impress industry bosses at the Cannes Film Festival in France in a bid to shake off the image of Bollywood musicals.

The director is in France for the annual gathering to showcase his new project, The Gangs of Wasseypur, and it's one of a handful of Indian dramas being unveiled at the event.

And Kashyap is adamant the movie industry in his native country is undergoing such a dramatic change that hard-hitting films could soon overshadow traditional, fun-filled Bollywood hits.

He tells the BBC, "The buzz is reassuring because we have often come here and were the big joke... There is a lot that is happening in India... It's going through real change in the kind of film-makers that are coming through and the kind of stories that are being told, the kinds of film being made and the kind of films that are working at the box office."

The British beauty turned 42 on Tuesday and celebrated by flying to the Palestinian city and taking a tour of the West Bank area.

She told a Palestinian television station, "As much travelling as I've done, I've never come here. I'm happy to be here. Weapons and war, greed and oil... I hope it all stops. I care about health, about good vibrations, not destruction."

Patricia Heaton was reunited with her TV husbands Ray Romano and Neil Flynn as she was handed a Hollywood Walk of Fame honour on Tuesday.

The actress was the recipient of the 2,472nd star and her friends and family, including actor husband David Hunt and their four sons, looked on proudly as she accepted the accolade.

And they weren't the only ones cheering Heaton - her onscreen partners Romano and Flynn, from shows Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle respectively, were also on hand to celebrate with her.

Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa capped the tribute by proclaiming it Patricia Heaton Day in Hollywood, and the actress declared, "I'm overwhelmed. I came to Hollywood 20 years ago at the age of 30. I had no agent and no manager... God opened a door for me and by God I mean Ray Romano."
