The Dictator Rules The U.K. Box Office


Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator ruled the U.K. box office at the weekend (18-20May12), taking almost $8 million (£5 million) to debut at the top spot.


The British funnyman has been tirelessly promoting his new outrageous alter-ego Admiral General Aladeen and it paid off, bumping The Avengers into second place.


The superhero film took $4.4 million (£2.8 million), while its nearest rival was Tim Burton's latest offering Dark Shadows ($2.5 million/£1.6 million).


Comedy American Pie: Reunion gained $2 million (£1.3 million) at the box office and new martial arts movie The Raid debuted at five with $668,156 (£417,596).
